Season of Giving

As the holidays are fastly approaching, I reflect back on where we were 60 days ago . . . WOW, we have come so far!  It is amazing to watch the transformations of each home and the families.

South Hutchinson Location - 12/15/2014

Partridge Location - 12/15/2014

The progress to these homes is amazing in such a short amount of time . . . and thank you to some amazing volunteers from Journey Church and within the community, our progress is significant!

Journey church has contributed two work groups to date to help with roofing of two homes in South Hutchinson.

As we begin our journey into the beginning of 2015, the families will begin increasing their activity on site as the homes are closing in and power is connected.  This time of year can become difficult for any individual as the weather becomes a little less predictable and extremely cold.  The families are committed to working on their homes and will brave what mother nature has in store to achieve the ultimate dream of building and owning their new home by spring!

Any individuals or groups interested in volunteering please contact our offices at 620.662.8370 ext. 715.

From all the staff and families from Interfaith Housing Services, Inc., we want to wish you a Merry Christmas!

Ground Breaking - Success!

As I reflect back on the last few weeks of events, I have an overwhelming sense of excitement and pride!
Tomorrow we are closing on our construction loan. After the ink dries, we will own a piece of land! It's kind of scary taking on such a large loan and having everything be official and "real", but also it's exciting because it's the first big step. Everything up to this has been talking and planning, but this part is actual DOING! I jokingly asked Susan Goans if after we signed the loan documents tomorrow, if we could go to the lot and pitch a tent since it would officially be our lot! She said that technically, we could, but the men who would be there moving dirt around probably wouldn't appreciate it! The next step after the loan closing is the ground breaking. I am so excited to finally be getting started! I can only imagine what the next 6-9 months are going to be like with a new born and building a new house. I'm a little nervous, but mostly just excited to see all of the planning and preparations come together and start creating something!
-Michelle
The whole thing just feels so unreal to us.  The thought of building a brand new house in a safe neighborhood to raise our children for not much more then what we pay to rent a home from public housing in Wichita. It all just seems to good to be true.  I'm sure once it is all done is when it will really hit us that we actually did it and made a real dream come true.  But we would have never had this opportunity without Interfaith, thank you!

I have had a lot of people reach out to me since the article was released. Wanting to know more information and if they qualify, people offering to help my son and i. I didn’t realize we would be helping more than just ourselves with this program…but also raising awareness for other single moms like myself and showing them they can have a better life. It’s very neat.           - Sadie

On October 20, 2014, Interfaith Housing Services, Inc. hosted a ground breaking ceremony for South Hutchinson.  I personally don't believe I was prepared or even expected the attention from the local community and across the United States.  As you see the day after the ground breaking ceremony news about the ceremony was everywhere.  As you see from the list below this was huge!

On November 2, 2014, Interfaith Housing Services, Inc., hosted another ground breaking ceremony in Partridge for the Mitts family.  As this ground breaking was a celebration for the community.  The community of Partridge has opened their arms and embraced the Mitts Family.

So now you ask what's next . . . within no time at all dirt was flying, and concrete was mixing.  This week framing will begin on the homes in South Hutchinson.  Family members contributed their first work day yesterday, and were extremely excited!

We are always looking for volunteers, groups or anyone interested in the program!

This is Really Happening . . . .

All the hard work and patience has paid off.  As we are approaching the closing process for each families' construction loans on October 15, 2014, it seems surreal that we have came to this point.  It seems that the roller coaster ride we have been on for the last ten months is a distant memory as the excitement is at an all time high.
We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.  Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.  For in this hope we were saved.  But hope that is seen is no hope at all.  Who hopes for what they already have?  But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.         - Romans 8:22-25

On Saturday, October 11, 2014, The Hutchinson News published a story that interviewed two of our families.  When I personally read the story, it moved me to a level of excitement that can not be explained.  Please click on the link below to read the published story:

On October 13, 2014, the families came together for a required pre-construction meeting.  The meeting is a required attendance by each family before they can begin the sweat equity construction process.  As this is one of the most important meetings they will attend in the course of the build.   Each family signed an agreement stating that they will contribute a minimum of 20 hours sweat equity each week during the construction process of their home.

Mark Borecky and Jason Chastain with Mark Borecky Construction talked with the families about expectations and the role their company will play with helping each family complete the construction of their homes.

Mark shared a reading with the families for inspiration and motivation:

The Obituary

Our church was saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our most valued members, Someone Else.  Someone's passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill.  Else has been with us for many years and for every one of those years, Someone did far more than a normal person's share of the work.  Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone's list, "let Someone Else do it".  Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results; "Someone Else can work with that group."  It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the most liberal givers in our church.  Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed Someone else would make up the difference.
Someone Else was a wonderful person; sometimes appearing superhuman.  Were the truth known, everybody expected too much of Someone Else.  Now Someone Else is gone!  We wonder what we are going to do.  Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it?  Who is going to do the things Someone Else did?  When you are asked to help this year, remember ---we can't depend on Someone Else anymore

The families also had the opportunity to begin selected their finishing materials for their homes.  Some families picked their siding, brick, trim and roofing colors along with flooring, cabinetry, paint and trim selections.

As the Housing Programs Director with Interfaith Housing Services, Inc. I have decided to share the adventure of our first build through the eyes of our families and the employees helping make dreams come true.

First a little background:

In January of 2014, Interfaith Housing Services was awarded the USDA 523 T & TA Grant to oversee the building of 18 homes.  As with any new program you never know what you are getting into until you are there.  As for me, I knew it was a calling to make an impact on the community.

The Mutual Self Help Housing Program allows families to work together to build their homes.  Utilizing sweat equity to reduce the price of the homes this allows families from low to moderate income to achieve the American Dream of owning their own home.  After several months of recruiting we are excited to help four families dreams come true.

On September 22nd all the families came together for the first time.  Each family met with USDA to go over documents and were able to see the housing plans for the very first time.

On October 15th we will begin moving dirt to start the foundation work on three homes in South Hutchinson and one home in Partridge.  October 20th we will have a ground breaking ceremony in South Hutchinson.

Quote from one of our families regards to the ground breaking ceremony:
"We are so excited! My son even made me buy him a miniature shovel and tool kit, he wants to help"

One family has agreed to share their excitement, fears, and challenges during the course of the build. I am proud to introduce Steve and Michelle Dixon and family.

Michelle shares her words below:
Our Family
Hello, I’m Michelle and this is my husband Steve, son Konnor, daughter Natalie, and our baby girl Brynn is due in November.  This is the story of how we became homeowners with the help of Interfaith Housing, the CA$H Program, and the Mutual Self-Help Housing program. We moved to Hutchinson from eastern Michigan almost three years ago. When we first arrived in Hutchinson, we did not have our own place to live and neither Steve nor I had a job. We lived in my mom’s spare bedroom for our first six months in Kansas. During April of 2012, Steve got a job, we found a small home to rent, and we were happy to discover that we were expecting our second child, Natalie. I found a part-time job while I was pregnant, but quit shortly after my daughter was born in order to stay home and take care of the kids. As of today, we are still renting the same small home.
Wanting to own a home
Since we started dating back in 2005, Steve and I had either lived in Student Housing in college, or rented an apartment or house. Rent is expensive and renting doesn't provide the freedom and investment that owning a home does. We always wanted to own our own home, but thought that it wouldn't be possible because of several reasons, one being that we couldn't save up a 20% down payment. Our family continued to grow, but we couldn't afford to rent a big enough house to hold us all. I had heard of some federal and state programs that could help people with down payment assistance, so during an Open House, I asked a Realtor if she had any information about the programs, but she told me that those kinds of programs didn't exist anymore or were difficult to get. I decided it was at least worth looking in to further because we had nothing to lose.
Realtor
We knew we wanted to buy a home, but had no clue where to start. Some friends of ours had recently purchased their home using government assistance programs, so we asked them if they could refer us to their Realtor. A very nice and helpful woman spoke with us about all of the different programs that we could take advantage of.  She explained that some Realtor either aren't aware of the programs, or don’t like to bother with all of the paperwork involved. She told us about the Mutual Self-Help program, the CA$H program, and others. At the time, we wanted to own a home as quickly as possible, so we weren't interested in building our own home. We decided to sign up for the CA$H program and touch base with her again after we had taken the class.
CA$H Program
The CA$H program had just finished a class the week before we called. We had to wait a few months before there was another class we could attend. Finding childcare was a challenge, but I’m glad we did because the CA$H program was worth it! We both really enjoyed the class and learned a lot. It helped us learn how to prioritize our goals and save money. It was nice to be in a room full of other people who were in our shoes and wanted to own a home, but needed help with a down payment. During class, we heard Julia Westfahl speak about the Mutual Self-Help program again. I thought it sounded great on paper, but wasn't too interested. I felt that buying an older home was going to be challenging enough and building a new one would be impossible. I could tell by they look on Steve’s face however, that he had suddenly become very interested in the program! After a lot of discussion, prayer, and speaking with family and friends, we decided that the pros of the Mutual Self-Help program outweighed the cons. We would have a brand new house that didn't require any fixing up or major repairs, that would be energy efficient, and would be located in a small town.  We eventually just decided, how could we not take advantage of this amazing program, even if it was somewhat scary at first? It would almost be stupid to not do it!
Mutual Self Help Program
It’s been almost a nine months since we decided to build our own home using the Mutual Self Help Program. We haven’t even broke ground yet and the process has already been a wild ride, full of emotional ups and downs.
